“What’s different in the last two years is the ease with which Americans can find writers, historians, and good Samaritans sharing their tips and hard truths online for planning to move. An entirely new genre has emerged that’s part survival manual, part dispatch from beyond a deteriorating state. Those resources aside, the process is anything but easy and frictionless. Still, there is a sense of possibility”

Malus, which is a piece of “satire” but also fully functional, performs a “clean room” clone of open source software, meaning users could then sell, redistribute, etc. the software without crediting the original developers. But I have a hard time with the “clean room” argument since the LLM doing the behind-the-scenes work has already ingested the entire corpus of open source software – and somehow the output of the LLMs isn’t considered a derivative work.

In this video, we explore one of the weirdest survival tricks in nature called cloacal respiration — a method that helps certain turtles survive underwater for long periods without coming up for air. Why do they do this? How does it actually work? And is it really as strange as it sounds? Watch till the end to find out. https://youtu.be/raL1wZx_gFU

Mini, spoiler-free review of Red Team Blues, by Corey Doctorow

Community iconc/sciencefiction@lemmy.world by
AFK BRB Chocolate (CA version)@lemmy.ca

Every short description I come up with for this book sounds horrible, so that will have to be: The book follows Marty Hench, a 67-year-old forensic accountant. Add to that that it barely qualifies as SF, taking place ever so slightly in the future from when it was written, and not dealing with any technologies that don’t actually exist. All that being said, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It’s kind of a technological thriller. The characters in it, even the minor ones, all seem very three dimensional, and even though some of them are very bad, overall it’s full of compassion and integrity. One thing that feels worthy of mention: Doctorow takes the time at the end to sew up all the loose ends and give all the significant characters a visit, unlike so many books I’ve read recently that end somewhat abruptly with unanswered questions. Big thumbs up.

About MULTIVERSE

Destroy Reality. Create a Multiverse.

MULTIVERSE is a threaded, federated forum for anarcho-antirealists. The UI might remind you of Reddit, and we’re connected to dozens of other sites run by different people with different values. But if you came here, you’re probably an anarchist with a distaste for “objective” reality, and I promise that this site is a safe space for you.

Rule 1: No Bigotry. In addition to the usual bigotries, we do not appreciate kinphobia, pluralphobia, sysmedicalism, transmedicalism, denigration of xenogenders & neopronouns, fatphobia, or invalidation of fictives and fictionkin.

Rule 2: Limited Authoritarianism. Asking questions and good faith debate is encouraged, but we do not allow staunch support for the belief in an objective reality, or other authoritarian viewpoints. Debate tactics optimised to exhaust and intimidate our users (sometimes known as ‘sealioning’) will be removed.

Rule 3: Restricted Violence. Attacks against our users and vulnerable groups including threats, directed triggering, harassment, stalking, and doxxing are not allowed. Brigading, calls for revolution, and support for anarchic elements do not fall within this rule and are not considered problematic.

Rule 4: Moderator Accountability. Site admins and staff, and community moderators, are held to a higher standard than ordinary users in proportion with the powers they wield. Moderators are expected to be fair and patient, to explain to rulebreakers how to do better, and to choose reasonable ban durations that permit the possibility of rehabilitation and reintegration.
